Research Interests

My research revolves around the pathogenesis of virus infections.  This involves the study of host-virus interactions at the level of both virus and host.  I am interested in the role of virus genes in the virus life cycle and how specific genes interact with and manipulate host responses to ensure efficient and effective virus replication and in the function of individual host genes in control of virus infections, particularly those involved in innate immunity. The viruses that I work with include members of the herpesvirus family, in particular the gammaherpesvirus murid herpesvirus 4 which is an important model system for the study of gammaherpesvirus infections in their natural host, and influenza A virus.  Murid herpesvirus 4 genes of interest include the vtRNAs and miRNAs and the chemokine binding molecule M4.  Work on influenza virus includes study of the role of macrophages in virus infection, the role of interferon gamma in macrophage activation, and the development of novel antiviral agents.
